A: Here are some helpful links on what Canadians can import from other countries with regards to health products.

Please note that there is no mechanism for pre-approval for importation for personal importations.

The main page of the Health Canada website is www.hc-sc.gc.ca and within that is the Natural Health Products Ingredient Database.  You can use this to see how various ingredients are regulated in Canada.  http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/dhp-mps/prodnatur/applications/online-enligne/nhpid-bipsn-eng.php

Also, please see Health Canada's Guidance Document on the Import Requirements for Health Products.  This guide speaks to various health products as well as the distinction between commercial and personal (under 90 day supply) importations, as well as various classifications of health products.  http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/dhp-mps/compli-conform/import-export/gui-0084_biu-uif-eng.php

Please note that products containing prescription ingredients are not allowed to be imported by an individual (visitor exempted for a 90 days supply).  For a list of prescription drugs, here is a link to the page within our Health Canada website:  http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/dhp-mps/prodpharma/pdl-ord/pdl_list_fin_ord-eng.php

Controlled substances are also not permitted to be imported by mail or courier (such as DHEA). Please see the legislation here for a full list. This may be subject to CBSA action http://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/c-38.8/FullText.html

Per Health Canada, "Health Canada’s mission is to help the people of Canada maintain and improve their health.  Therefore, Health Canada recommends that you consult with your health care professional to help you determine your needs in terms of health products.  To learn more regarding purchasing drugs from over the Internet, please visit;
